it does not surprise parker to know that yumi lives in an ivory tower. it takes parker about forty minutes to get there from her own shithole apartment. the walk fucking sucks because 1. it's blistering cold and 2. she's holding a crockpot of hot soup. she's not worried about dropping it. she's worried it won't stay hot.

her nerves writhe. her stomach twists. she doesn't do shit like this. she doesn't do things for people.

but yumi's been a nice change of pace, taking residence in her head in place of parker's untouchable golden goddess. her nose crinkles, the corner of her lip tugging up and exposing teeth. gums chill and that snarl falls flat - there's no one around to see it anyway.

there never is.

the soup has to stay hot. she doesn't have much of anything by way of family memorabilia, but the soup recipe is an exception. it takes hours to make and it's literally magic.

she bites her lip, hefts the soup against her side to free up a hand, and roughly raps on the door.

The day found Yumi in bed beneath soft, sumptuous blankets, her hair in disarray, her face devoid of makeup, and her sinuses congested. Curled up by her feet was her Purrloin, Itazura. On the bedside table sat a box of tissues. The used ones clustered at the bottom of a trash can within easy reach.[break][break]

A knock at the front door brought Yumi out of her daze. She raised herself onto her elbows, confused. Likewise, Itazura raised his head and stared in the direction of the sound, eyes narrowed with suspicion.[break][break]

"Mei? Is that you?" Yumi called out. Her roommate had left to run some errands shortly after noon and had yet to return. But a knock on the door didn't make sense. Mei had a key to the apartment, after all.[break][break]

"It better not be a fucking soliciter," Yumi grumbled as she slowly climbed out of bed, putting on a fluffy beige robe and matching fuzzy slippers designed like Bunearys. Underneath, she wore only a white silk nightgown. Itazura hopped onto the floor and stuck to his mistress' side as she shuffled across the living room to open the front door.[break][break]

The person on the other side of it was not Mei but a certain red-haired woman Yumi had not expected to see.[break][break]

"Parker? What are you doing here? What is that?"[break][break]

Yumi had texted Parker that morning, bored out of her mind and feeling like shit. Her messages revealed how sick she was, a common cold plaguing her with all the usual symptoms, and migraines on top of that. Parker had asked for her address, but Yumi had expected that maybe the redhead would drop off some cold medicine — nothing more.[break][break]

Certainly not the heavy crockpot Parker cradled in her arms.

oh shit oh fuck oh shit oh fuck. is she really doing this? she should turn around. she should put the crockpot on the floor and leave the soup and turn around and l-e-a-v-e. she should just go home and stare at her phone like a piece of shit and wait for yumi to text her for another meaningless romp in the hay.

but she stands like there a fucking deerling in the headlights and blinks when the door opens.

her grin cracks, smiling wide, shaking off the rest of the frost that had been climbing up her sides. seeing her makes it easy. it always works out that way.

"i made soup," she says simply. "'cause if you're bitch enough to complain about a cold over text to me, figured you might end up dead from helplessness. and also this soup's really fuckin' good."

she shifts her weight. "so...can i come in?"

To Yumi's credit, she had never seen a crockpot before. She stared at the bulky device in Parker's arms for a brief moment, uncomprehending, before shaking her head in bewilderment and stepping aside. "You might as well since you came all this way."[break][break]

The interior of the apartment was not luxurious by any means — at least, not by Yumi's standards. The living area was clean and tidy, however, with comfortable furniture to Mei Liu's tastes. To one side was a combined dining and kitchen area, while a hallway on the other side led to bedrooms and bathrooms.[break][break]

Yumi flopped down onto the couch and wrapped a throw blanket around herself. Itazura joined her there, hopping into her lap; her hands automatically wrapped around him and began stroking his fur.[break][break]

"What kind of soup is it?" she asked Parker. Yumi assumed, of course, that the redhead would go about doing whatever was necessary with the crockpot without needing Yumi's help.

her voice is nasally. yep, definitely sick. well, at least it hadn't been an excuse not to see parker. not that yumi seemed like the type to make up an excuse. nah, she'd tell parker right to her damn face. she smiles at the thought and hefts the crockpot when yumi lets her in.

it takes one look-over to take in all the information surrounding her. while yumi goes to recline on the couch, parker heads into the kitchen. she sets the crockpot down, but doesn't fiddle for a nearby plug. the damn thing stopped working a couple years ago. then she dares take off the top and sighs in relief when steam wafts up into her face.

parker makes herself at home by rummaging around in the cupboards. there are enough cutlery and plateware for two people, she notes lightly to herself.

"bone marrow," she says when she finds the bowls. her hands aren't manicured, but she'd taken care to scrub the grease off of them. the day before, she'd been taking apart a car for parts. but her hands are still rough around the edges and give her pause when she reaches for the polished ceramic.

pink hair is swept out of her eyes with a toss of her head. she scoops the soup in and rummages for a spoon, dunks it in, and goes to stand over yumi.

"but with vegetables and budew wine and shit. it's good. you'll be better by tomorrow, i swear."

Bone broth and vegetables sounded par for the course for soup. It was what the cook always made whenever Yumi was sick, even after she had grown into an adult. A pang of nostalgia filled the couch-ridden woman in that moment, causing her hands to still upon Itazura's small body. With a light sigh, she closed her eyes against the feeling.[break][break]

"If I'm not, I'm coming over to kick your ass for making a promise you can't keep," Yumi replied, sitting up to accept the bowl of soup. To her relief and delight, it was still piping hot. She scooped a spoonful and blew on it a few times before tasting the concoction.[break][break]

The first revelation to hit her was the taste. The broth was light and flavorful, suffused with the right balance of salt, spice, and umami. A nibble of cabbage confirmed the vegetables were cooked through appropriately, with a bit of crunch left in them.[break][break]

Yumi looked up at the redhead who still stood before her, eyes wide with wonder. "Parker, this is really fucking good."[break][break]

The second revelation was just how wonderful hot soup felt going down Yumi's sore throat. The heat spread throughout her body with every spoonful, a comforting sensation. Before long, the black-haired woman had eaten half the bowl, though she put it down then to reach for a nearby tissue box. The heat and spice were clearing out her sinuses, fast.[break][break]

"Sit down," Yumi told her visitor between blows of her nose. "Unless you're just going to leave?"

"yeah, not worried about that," parker says with a roll of her eyes. "you look like shit." and she probably feels like shit. shit enough for parker to bat her around like a punching bag. no, ass-kicking is completely off the table. but she's no reason to worry anyway. her soup's delicious and she knows it.

so explain the nervous sweating in her palms when she takes a casual seat across from yumi. she gives her a wide berth. she's not an idiot and beating people's heads in when your own is full of snot isn't her idea of fun.

the common cold is parker's undoing.

"'course it's good. and why, cupcake, y'want me to leave?" she lets her cheek fall against her shoulder, looking sideways at yumi. seeing all of her angles again (but this time with more clothes on). her eyes betray her hunger.

"so... you got a roommate or a girlfriend or somethin'?" she says, gesturing to the coat hanging by the door. a coat that's not yumi's size. "scare 'em off with your sick cooties?"

Yumi blew her nose before responding, scrunching up the used tissue and tossing it into a trash bin she'd pulled over to the couch the other day. "Of course not," she replied, a hint of a scoff entering her voice. "You came all this way. Might as well stay, though don't blame me if you get sick with my cooties."[break][break]

She stuck her tongue out at Parker, flashed her a grin, then resumed drinking the soup at a more leisurely pace.[break][break]

"Roommate," Yumi clarified. "Mei is out right now running errands. She said she'd be back this afternoon, but she didn't say when." A pause for more soup. "I think you'd like Mei. She's sassy and likes to fight. Not the same way you do, though."[break][break]

In fact, Parker and Mei couldn't be more different. But both were sweet, and neither one minded Yumi's abrasive personality. For that, she considered both to be important friends.

"don't think i'm in danger unless we swap spit," parker says, ~~which is not how that works at all~~. she sticks her tongue right back out at yumi and gives a dumb waggle of her chin, eyes widening to enforce the silly expression. then she sinks back into the chair and props her heels up on yumi's coffee table.

roommate. hackles down, parker. she's awfully possessive when she shouldn't be, not that she'd ever admit to that.

parker rolls her eyes. usually that means a sharp tongue. "i'm more than a hot piece of ass, y'know," she says with a snort. "sticks and stones just work better. that's how the saying goes, right?"

pretty sure it was parker's playful knock to the head and not yumi's venomous words that scared the shit out their target the other day. granted, she's pretty sure those words will stay with him long after his nose heals.

It seemed Parker didn't quite get what Yumi was insinuating. She finished off her soup, using the pause to contemplate whether she should reveal Mei's secondary career — or was it her primary career?[break][break]

"She's an assassin," Yumi eventually said. "She works with us. Well. Not specifically with you and me, but Team Rocket."[break][break]

Setting down the empty soup bowl on the coffee table, Yumi nestled back into the couch and wrapped her blanket more tightly around herself. She closed her eyes and exhaled deeply.[break][break]

"That was really good," she said of the soup. "You'll have to make it for me again someday, even when I'm not sick." She cracked open one eye to look over at Parker. "Do you cook a lot? Maybe I can come over for dinner some time."[break][break]

Count on Yumi to invite herself over to someone's house and expect them to do work for her.

"oh shit?" it won't take a genius to see the discomfort that washes over parker's face and her frame, despite her hasty attempt to cover it up with that cocksure half-smile of hers. internally, though, she's thinking shoulda just fuckin' stayed in my lane. what's on the top of her no-no list? getting chummy with fellow rockets.

'cause fellow rockets are always in deeper shit than she is.

"yeah, sure," she says quickly, eager to move past it and shove off the thoughts of an assassin sits in this chair. yumi's cool that her roommate just kills people. does yumi kill people?

"i mean, no. yes, i do, but my place is a shithole. grade a shithole." she props her head in her hands, elbows balancing on her legs. that smile widens. "i'll take ya out though. proper dinner and all."

Even in her weakened condition, Yumi did not miss the flicker of discomfort in Parker's expression before she smoothed it away with a smile. But Yumi found she did not have the energy or desire to pursue that curiosity. Instead, she merely closed her eyes and said, "Yeah. It's cool."[break][break]

She opened them again at Parker's suggestion.[break][break]

"A proper dinner?" Yumi asked, her eyebrows raised in surprise. Parker was a great lay, but Yumi doubted their ideas of a 'proper dinner' aligned. Yumi enjoyed spending time with Parker as a friend, but if the other woman had other ideas… "Where are you thinking?"

the shitty burger joint down the road is absolutely not someplace parker would take yumi to if she's trying to impress her. now, there is that place about a ten minute walk from here. she'd worked as a hand for hire for the restaurant owner; shook down his silent partner when things got complicated.

it's way out of her pay grade, but she could probably call in a favor...

"the atelier?" she tries hopefully. five star, to-die-for kalosian cuisine. surely that'd impress yumi.

Yumi's eyes lit up. She knew the restaurant Parker suggested. The Atelier was not far from her and Mei's apartment, just a 10-minute walk or an even quicker taxi ride if she was feeling lazy.[break][break]

But it was definitely not within Parker's paygrade — as far as Yumi knew, anyway. Neither did Parker strike Yumi as the kind of person who would bother eating at a fancy restaurant without good reason.[break][break]

"The Atelier?" Yumi echoed at last. "I didn't take you for someone who cared for haute cuisine. But if you're offering, then who am I to turn it down?"[break][break]

She coughed suddenly, a reminder of her present condition.[break][break]

"After I'm better, though. I'll text you."
